On my old computer they showed up as grids, but I recently installed a newer Photoshop and the brushes turns up as just one per line, with the a box on the side showing how the brush looks if you draw a wave. How do I change this?

Problem installing photoshop?
I'm trying to install photoshop on my pc but everytime I try I keep gettitng a error message saying

And say you want the brick wall between the door and the window to be colored.
What you do is, select the area that you want to color. Whether using the lasso tool or the marquee tool.
Then you go to Hue/Saturation (Ctrl+U). And in the bottom right of that window, there is a selection that says Colorize.
And that will add color to the selected area.
After that you just move the Hue bar up and down till you get the desired color.

You can color a picture using the paintbrush tool. There are different modes to it. You need the mode called ''color'' and that will add color to your picture.

You seem like your leaning towards a Graphic Designer /Web Designer career instead of a computer programmer.
I am a software developer and when I do work on GUI, then those skill sets you seem to have will come in very handy.
Computer programming is more than just user interface....you will need to wear different hats per say on developing a a full website/program application.
I suggest you start looking into understanding HTML/CSS/ and maybe Javascript to see if you are attracted into doing web development.....
A graphics designer job would need to have very good artistic ability....and if you have that....thats a good sign.
Ultimately, do what you enjoy to do the most.

I'd start off with Photoshop and Illustrator by Adobe. After you mastered those, then Quark. My husband uses several programs, but those are the ones he started off with. I think he also uses InDeisgn, also be Adobe. He uses a ton of other programs, but it's usually best to master one before going on to the next one. He taught himself, mainly, by experimenting with the programs and reading the manuals. He started off as a Graphic Artist and did mostly package design and now is a Multimedia Designer and does web designs, CDs, and videos. It's a job that requires someone with a sense of design and is driven. (My husband will work an absurd ammount of hours, and part of those hours are because he wants to expand on his knowledge!)
You can take classes at a technical college to get started--there's a graphic arts degree offered at most colleges now. If you want to expand, then take some courses on web design as well. Knowing how to program helps with that aspect.
You'll want to take a course in graphic design, not programming.
Most art schools and technical / community colleges have coursework in digital graphic design. Then, there are some great universities for it, too, such as Rhode Island School of Design.

Right click the image on the layers palette (bottom right), and most likely the layer will be entitled ''background'', and select ''Layer from background''.

if the file is already flat (not layered), you can convert it to any other format, even JPG (at 100% quality). Of course, if you have Photoshop, you can read the tiff file with it and save it as PSD.
You can also get small but very good program IrfanVew (http://www.irfanview.com/) that will convert your file to bmp, emf, gif, jpg, and others.
RAM Space + Photoshop Question?!?
I am trying to download Photoshop Elements 5.0 onto my Dell Insipron 1300. Last time i attempted to do this, the laptop crashed, although i think it was because i did not check the CD, but i am not sure.
Anyways, the box says that 256MB of RAM is required, and 512 MB of RAM recommended. I currently have 504MB of RAM.
Is it okay for me to install it? Or do you think it might cause another crash ?
If its not , i'll go out and buy more RAM. But i would just like to know before i spend my money.

well, windows is telling yo the exact amount of your ram. in actuality, you have 512mb. this, according to what you said is enough. i had photoshop element 2.0 with 512 mb of ram and it worked well. i noticed that when doing intense work, it will slow down. i suggest quitting all applications other than photoshop when using photoshop. if you want to do more, get more, to put it simply.

It is a VERY powerful, VERY complex software. It is used mainly by professionals or students in the graphic arts and is quite expensive. However, if you can afford it and spend the time learning to use it, it can be very rewarding and useful.

Where did they download this copy of Photoshop from, if it was from a trusted source (such as adobe for their trial versions of software) then I very much doubt it is a virus.
However, downloading software from less-than-savoury places always has an inherent risk of containing trojans, worms, viruses.
Try installing an alternative Anti-Virus product to the one you already have - AVG have a good free anti-virus software you can use (if it isn't already your main anti-virus solution) - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/us/frt/0 and do a virus scan on your drives using that.
Also, try using something such as Your Uninstaller (http://www.download.com/3000-2096_4-1073... - free trial download here) which will fully remove any software and associated files/registry keys from your pc.

Why does Photoshop beep when I try to change image size?
I am using Photoshop 7.0 and have always used this program. Recently when I click on image%26gt; image size no box appears like it usually does to allow me to change dimensions and when I click the mouse anywhere I get a beep as if there is an error and everything is frozen. It will beep about 20 to 30 times when clicking and then it is all unfrozen but still no image size box. Everything else is working fine. What is going on??

create a new blank image which is the combined pixel height of both pictures, and the pixel width of the widest picture.
then paste each picture into the new blank image, one on the top and one on the bottom.

CMYK in photoshop? (really frustrating)?
So for my school yearbook, the editors told me to use CMYK mode in photoshop to make the pages (if i use RGB the colours will come out funny).
Anyways, when I add a picture to the canvas in CMYK mode, the colour changes a bit? Is this supposed to happen?
When it's printed, will the colour go back to original or look like what it looks like in the CMYK mode.
And is it okay if I work in RGB and then convert everything to CMYK at the end. (is there gonna be image quality loss etc.)
And if I DO convert the RGB to CMYK later on, will it look like the RGB when I print it?

If the editors want cmyk, you should work in cmyk, as this is how they want to print it, otherwise the results are totally unpredictable.

My son has downloaded so many Photoshop brushes that when he clicks on the brushes menu, half are off the screen and inaccessible to him.
Short of deleting brushes to make more space, is there a way to put them in sub-folders? And how would you do this?

The brush tab is usually in the pallette well, at the top right. You can drag it out of there and move it on the screen. There's also an options button (a small arrow in a round button) that you can click on and choose different views). One of them shold give you more screen real estate.

I am fairly familiar with photoshop, and use it often to ink and color pictures. However, I see other peoples work and their lines are more natural and not as heavy of a black. How can I achieve this? Is it a layer setting? I tried changing the opacity and it looks like garbage. I hope you know what I mean. Assuming that the second sample was, actually, created entirely in the computer, then, I'd have to agree that a graphics tablet would give you the flexibility you seek. With that, not only can you select a line thicness, but Photoshop allows you to program the tablet's pressure sensitivity, so that harder pressure can give you a thicker bolder line. You can also switch from a hard edged pen or pencil line, to a softer brush like stroke.
Of course, that, second example may be a paper drawing that was scanned into the computer. It's a technique I use a LOT.

I can think of one thing, and that is using a graphics tablet. One of the things about a tablet is that the pen you use is pressure sensitive, so more like using a real world media brush or pen and ink rather than digital, it changes the line as you work depending on how much pressure you apply. If you look at the brush settings in photoshop you will see things like airbrush and pressure settings, tilt and rotation. Those are all settings for using a tablet and the tools that work with the tablet. In other words, working with a tablet is closer to working with ''natural'' media, and as you get better with the tablet, your work looks more natural.

Beyond that... it definitely looks like, to me, a specific brush, but not quiet sure what. Maybe they did use what the first person suggested, it does look like awfully natural strokes that would be hard to get using a mouse.

Since programs install files in various directories on Windows, you don't have a clean install. Buy the software if you need it and install from the cd.

In Photoshop 2.0, throwing away the contents inside Pref folder would fix this. More modern photoshop writes files all over the hard drive. Each time you quit the software it takes a snapshot of the setup to hibernate.

Dimitris' suggestion about using Curves is good but maybe somewhat difficult. Using a Levels adjustment layer is a little easier.
Layer/New Adjustment Layer/Levels. Then move the center gray pointer to the right. as necessary to darken your pencil lines.

you could out line it by hand in photo shop, if you zoom in its easyer, but i think its easyer to ink it i think.
start with scanning at higher resolution ~300+ , then while in scanner settings, adjust contrast , theres also bitmap option, but may be too much pixelation, then in photoshop save as psd photoshop file, then edit, adjust contrast/brightness for your purposes, so don't ink original yet, if needed scan copy and ink it instead,

You can use the Photocopy or Stamp filter in the filter gallery, adjusting the Light/Dark Contrast and Smoothness to your desired settings. You may also consider converting the drawing to Grayscale (even though it is probably already) and then applying filters. Also, adjusting the setting on your scanner to scan a bit darker than normal could help too.

You are correct. There have been mention that PSE3 and Vista do not get along together and that Adobe does not intend to provide a patch to make it work. PSE5, if you can find a legal source, has a patch for Vista that can be downloaded from Adobe.
But to answer your question. I have version 2 thru 6. Six presents an entirely different look as the background surrounding your images is a dark gray. After a bit of getting used to it, it makes easier color editing. There are some things that I think are good improvements over PSE3. The Quick Fix works really well. As with PSE5 the Sharpening tools have been moved to the Enhance menu which makes it handier. The Organizer does not try to take over your Photoshopping. The Effects have been rearranged in a logical manner. You should be able to figure out how to apply instructions for PSE3 with PSE6. The Styles and Effects is where the major rearrangement has taken place but all is findable. All the styles and effects are the same plus there is more.

They're still using 3.0? That's a bit behind the times. Yes, there are major differences between the two versions. Anyway, I would say you need to check with your instructor. I'm sure you're not going to be the only one in class running Vista and so unable to use 3.0.

Running Adobe Photoshop CS3 on a laptop?
How much memory and RAM is necessary to run Photoshop CS3 on a laptop with Vista? I'm looking at one with 160gb memory and 2gb RAM. Is 3 or 4 gb RAM necessary, particularly if I'm running other programs (Firefox, iTunes, etc.) at the same time?

You should be fine with what you are looking at with the 2gb of Ram. That is what I have a photoshop works just fine. If you want to upgrade with more RAM I probably won't hurt anything other then your pocketbook. Adobe requires 512 mb of RAM and 1 GB of memory to run the program. So you should be fine even with everything else.

I am running it in mac osx with vista simultaneously on 4 gigs with a pile of other stuff too, so you should be good.
Vista with 160gb hard drive and 2gb of ram will work fine, try to buy a laptop 1.8ghz duo core or higher and it will work very nicely,CS3 starts and runs much faster than CS2.

There are different anti-aliasing settings you can use - I believe on of them is ''Crisp'' check out the anti-aliasing settings for text and you'll see about 5 different options.
Remember you still need to have adequate resolution for print it's good to have about 300dpi. For web, text sizes under 9pt will be problematic - in particular serif faces.

photoshop is a raster program as opposed to vector so text is converted to dots, bitmaps, hence a little fuzzy

Make sure it's not anti-aliased. Click the font and select ''sharp'' or ''crisp'' in the options box
Your dpi needs to be set at least at 200 dpi for font to print smoothly. Also check that you have the appropriate style setting (crisp, bold, anti-alias) selected in the character palette.
I suppose you could rasterize the layer and than use the sharpen filter on it. If you are doing really large work than the fonts themselves are being upsized so they're not going to look really sharp. That's why people use vector graphics in some cases for large text incorporated images. It's possible that the font you have chosen to use is itself blurry. If you are just working with an average sized image (like 3000x3000 pixels or less) It's possible that in your font settings you have chosen ''bold'' or ''crisp''. Maybe try using ''none''?
highlight the text u are having issues with then see at the top u have like ''smooth, sharp, strong, none'' on anti-aliasing? have a play with changing that to each type to get the best for u - works best on big text... none is only really used on small text

It is only showing the text fuzzy to save resolution so when you work on it it isn't taking up huge amount of RAM. Go under preferences, there is a way to switch the reso of text so that it is optimal rather than the fuzzy kind that saves RAM.

From a previous question plus lots of Internet searching, I'm aware that in order to download 'Photoshop Elements 6 Upgrade' from Adobe, I have to pay about 20GBP more than Americans. I've tried buying in by pretending I'm in the USA, but it won't let me because of the UK address on my debit card. So, I'm wondering if I could download the trial and then get an American friend to pay for it and I'll send her the money. I'm not bothered about getting support for the product, only paying less. My friend would probably be sent an activation code to activate the software with, so if I was to use that, would Adobe know I downloaded it from the UK?

Here's a similar image of my wife that I did in about 1970. I ended up making a posterization of this in the darkroom. This is the original, but you can see that there is still some detail in the lightest areas, whereas your picture has areas that are just white with no information at all in the white spots.

Well you can't embed flash in dreamweaver, because dreamweaver is an IDE and Flash is either the technology or the software to output SWF files. So you have a little confusion in terminology.

I don't use Corel Draw but in any case just export the picture in a common format such as JPEG or BMP, then you can easily import it on Photoshop.

yes that's easily done! If you make something in flash, export it. Then import that file into dreamweaver. Newer versions of flash and dreamweaver will actually have options like ''export for dreamweaver'' or ''import flash document'' so it should be very easy, they are made to work together, along with freehand and fireworks.

^ i advise you should read the requirements over again carefully. i suggest using a digital camera with megapixels atleast 3+ to take your picture.
the digital camera will have a better quality than your camera phone and after reading the requirements you should NOT use your camera phone for this type of photo.
or it says that you can scan a photograph you have (that are within the requirements of the green card lottery). for the ''24-bit'' color. that is what is suggested when you scan your photo. there should be an option for that when using the scanner.

One of the easiest programs to use for this would be Photoshop Elements 3.0 or later instead of using the full Photoshop program which costs around $600. Elements will run you less than $100 and you will be able to find how to resize your photo and change the color bit depth. Photoshop CS2 is the latest and greatest full photoshop program, but Elements will do what you want for a fraction of the cost. I will warn you that camera phones don't have a very large file size and that working with them is usually disappointing to say the least. Most digital cameras these days shoot photos in the thousands of pixels wide and high. More pixels means a larger image and more room to manipulate image size, color and sharpness. With such a small file, your final result will be grainy looking and not very sharp, especially if you try to enlarge it more than twice its size. Below is a process I recently wrote for a photography club. It tells how to resize a larger image down to 768 x 512 pixels but if you follow this you can resize it to any size you want (even though it may not turn out the sharpest). I was using this process to project images not print them, but the idea is similar. Remember, resizing your image is the last item on your editing list when you are working on your photo. Good luck!

i was working on something in photoshop, i had like over 40 layers, then all of a sudden my computer FROZE!!
i restarted the computer, opened the psd file, and then all my layers were merged in one background file. Is there any way I can get my previous file back, before it froze. I have no idea why it merged together, but now its all messed up. I don't want dumb answers please, only answer if you know what you are talking about. I am seriously frustrated right now.

I downloaded the trial version of photoshop to help me decide on car paint. i figured out how it worked but whenever i am using the lasso tool to outline the car, every once and a while photoshop breifly refreshes and connects my lines (sort of like you hit enter) so i cant finish the real outline. if i have undo or backstep it erases the whole lasso. any ideas???

If you just want to change the colors try this:
Go to : image %26gt; adjustments %26gt; Hue/saturation then set the hue by shifting it from left till right.
This will do the job and it's more accurate, if there are any details which you don't want to change color
use the history brush (it's in your tool pallet)

Okay, maybe not Photoshop but I would like to know where I can download a photo editing java program for my phone. At the moment I have PhotoDJ on my Sone Ericsson but it's limited to what effects you can add to your snaps.

A dot is a pixel, dpi is dots per inch, and a ppi is a pixel per inch, so it's the same thing yes.
When you print you have to print in such a way that it has to stretch onto the size of the paper, and you type that in inches to photoshop and print to fit the page.(Stretching)

For my photoshop class final, I have to photoshop an image an then have it laser engraved on glass or tile. Because the laser engraver cannot pick up fine details like freckles or hair strands I need to make an clip art like picture (vector image). However on most of the tutorials I have seen to vector an image in photoshop, it requires the use of the Pen tool, which elements does NOT have. Photoshop/InDesign Question?
I opened a picture in Photoshop. I want to change the resolution of that picture to 300 dpi. I then want to place the 300 dpi photo into InDesign so that it IS NOT pixilated. Can someone please explain to me how to change the resolution of a photo in photoshop to 300 dpi, and then how to import (or paste) that 300 dpi photo in InDesign so it is not pixilated.

First off, you want to open it in photoshop. Then, go to image/image size. Next, change the dpi to 300. 250 is ok, but 300 or more is best. 72 res is very bad for printing. If the image is originally 72 and you change it to 300, then it is going to be smaller. If you blow it up from there it is going to look pixelated still. You want to next save it as a .tiff because tiffs seem to hold the most information and are a little bit bigger files than jpgs, but they work just as good. either one will work. If it says something about layers when saving, you need to cancel saving and flatten your layers and then save it. It just makes it a smaller file when you flatten them. Next you need to go into indesign and go File/place or ctrl+D. Find the file that you just saved and double click on it. then you can click anywhere in the document and place it where you want it. Remember, The Black arrow tool controls the bounding box in InDesign. The White arrow tool controls the picture in the bounding box.

Try fixing the install, go to Add or Remove programs (from the Control Panel if you're in XP) and choose Change/Remove. You should be able to fix it from there, you may need to have the disc it originally came with (if you had one) or the original download file.

i am following a tutorial on how to morph faces on photoshop, and i ran intoa problem. here is the problem part :
We are going to use the yoda picture as the base, and add the kid's face into it. First open both pictures with Photoshop. Then using your Rectangular Marquee Tool (M), select the area of the kid's face that we want, and then switch to the Move Tool (V) and drag the selection onto the yoda picture:

Photoshop converting paths to selection doing weird selections?
Can someone tell me in Photoshop CS3 on my MACs. why when I make a new path such as a circle within a circle and then change it into a selection, sometimes it deletes out the middle of the circle like I want it, but sometimes when I select the path and make it a selection, it only makes a circle then I have to go back and subtract the inner circle? Now it is doing something even weirder. I go to change a path to a selection and it is the inverse of whatever the path is. So I always have to invert it. I've restarted the computer and reinstalled photoshop. Is there a preference setting somewhere?

Okay, i'm pretty sure this is not just a CS3 issue, but we'll see.
Somewhere on your top bar, while you have your pen tool selected, there is a succession of little tiny buttons with images of squares overlapping on them. when you arrow over them, one of them should say 'exclude overlying path areas'. On CS2, it's the two dark squares. Does this help?

Photoshop, GIMP, or openCanvas?
Lately, I have been really interested in digital drawing/painting. I currently use Photoshop Elements 3 (which doesn't really do much). I want to expand my options and move on to a better program.
The other day, I downloaded GIMP for Mac, but the program responds very slowly to my tablet's strokes (5 second delay at the least). Is this a common problem, or is something wrong with it?
I'm really interested in Photoshop, but it is way out of my price range. I'm looking for a program under $100. openCanvas seems to be rather reasonable, but is it worth it?
I guess that what I'm really looking for is a good program for coloring (drawing would be nice as well, but it's not as important). I want airbrush capability and smooth coloring (no 5 second delays!).
I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Personally, I think Photoshop is the only way to go. Although its pricetag is pretty hefty, its tools are extremely powerful. However, I enjoy using OpenCanvas as well. It has similar tools as photoshop, but is more aimed towards tablet-users, it seems.

alright, so i download adobe photoshop element 6 and adobe photoshop cs3 yesterday. once they were all done downloading, i tried to open one of them, but when i want to continue with my trail, it tells me a problem was entercountered with trying to upload my 30 day trial. and tells me to restart me computure, or Reinstall this program again. and iv done all of that. none of its works.
and its the same with adobe Element.

I'm not sure if I can trust this website. It says I can try Photoshop free for 30 days but I'm afraid that they'll send me a package of $600 Photoshop or something. Should I try it? And will they actually do something like that?

I鈥檓 running Adobe Photoshop version 8.0. I designed a logo and added a style to it. I used the 鈥淏lack Anodized Metal鈥?style from the style tab of the 鈥淪tyles鈥?Window, which you can add by going to the Window Menu and clicking 鈥淪tyles.鈥?I went to Layer Menu, Layer Style, Bevel and Emboss, and changed the 鈥淭echnique鈥?drop down box to 鈥淪mooth鈥?instead of chisel hard. It helped my problem a little bit.

Your problem is that the non-stylized art doesn't have a high enough resolution. You should use it as a template and redraw it in Illustrator. Then, if you want to add the styles, import it into Photoshop setting your size to something larger than you will be using on the final piece at 300 ppi.

You can find the Foreground Color Swatch icon on the TOOLBOX. Hitting the Tab key hides the Toolbox.

im not really sure what you are talking about... but you might be looking to change the foreground/background colors on your tools palatte. you know where you can change your color... you have two colors there (default is black and white). well, there is a little arrow thing right by the colors. click that. or you can hit ''x'' which is a shortcut. hope this answered your question!!

1st - select quick mask mode in ur tool bar
2nd - select brush tool and highlight your eyes
3rd - select standard mode now, which beside quick mask mode
4th - Go to select -%26gt; Invert

6th - Choose colorise and now u can start play with the color u want

There are some photoshop tricks for that, you can find free instructions if you google. Doubt there's a specific program just for that, but you'll find tricks to do it.

When it comes to software - you GET what you PAY FOR.
That's an odd request. Adobe Fireworks is good editing system but it doesn't have a ''teeth whitening'' ability. My advice is get good at a program and use it to edit your teeth to your liking.

you can use adobe photoshop cs2 or above and use the quick mask mode to mask the teeth. To begin, return to edit mode and invert the selection. Now choose ImageAdjustmentsColor Balance and select Midtones. Move the Yellow/Blue slider to the right to add Blue (and remove Yellow) from the teeth. Click OK and now choose ImageAdjustmentsHue/Saturation and increase the Lightness to brighten the now whiter teeth even further.
Sorry I don't know of any free programs, but PaintShop Pro is a very good alternative to PhotoShop and a lot less expensive. (under $100).

It looks like you have black hair in the photo. Also the picture was taken in bad lighting and causing a yellow tint to it, it may be a little difficult to photoshop and have it look realistic. I would take a picture of yourself in better lighting.

Having just returned from a dive trip with a large number of underwater photos that needed color balancing. (Not enough flash to get any colors)
One way to do it:
Load a picture
Click New Action,
Click record,
Open the color balance controls,
boost the reds, lower the blue and green,
File/save as
File/close (This keeps you from having to click the jpeg quality select on every file. )
click stop on the action record.
To Color ballance an entire directory of pictures
Select automate / batch under the file menu.
Select the Action you wish to use
Select the folder from and to and click ok.
It will then perform the selected action on all the files in the directory chosen.
Practice on copies of your target directories.

I'm looking for a good photoshop or photo editor that is easy to use. Some things that I want in it is a rotoscope like tool that will do it by itself. Also I want it to change some of my pictures to black and white but leave a place of color (like the eyes on a face shot) for contrast. If it is free than that's better. You use the button with the rope-like figure by the toolbox(i forgot the name).. you know.. the one with which you could custom select something(like the magic wand tool).. select the strawberry in a way that you select ONLY the strawberry.. then press Ctrl+Shift+I.. that way it goes inverse so you get to select the whole picture except the strawberry.. then grayscale.脺 get it?
Duplicate the photo and close the original. Create another layer by Layer %26gt; New Adjustment Layer and select Saturation/Hue. In the window or dialog box that opens, slide the Saturation slider all the way to the left. Your photo will be b/w in this layer. Click OK. You now have two layers, the background which is color and the adjustment layer. The adjustment layer has two icons, one for Sat/Hue and the other to the right. It is solid white. Click once in this white box. Change your colors to the default black and white. With black as the foreground color. Select the Brush tool. Paint the area of the photo you want to be in color. Set the Brush tool to size and softness that works best for the photo you have.

With photoshop, you can do some very amazing things!
You can remove freckles, age lines, etc. For Christmas, I put a Christmas tree in our family photo, got rid of some speaker wire, added a photo to the wall and put my dog in the picture. All thanks for photoshop!

There are a billion things you can do with Photoshop. You can do the basic things like touchup freckles or pimples etc.
You can change the mood of a photograph by adding soft focus, changing the contrast. You can make a color photo black and white and make it look old by sepia tone to it. You can crop out bad parts of a photo.
Just play around with it and click on everything and see what it does. You can always hit undo!

It doesn't matter how far you are zoomed in. It will, by default, nudge one pixel at a time.
As far as I can tell, there's no way to change it.

Zoom in. When you are zoomed in, the amount of the 'nudge' reduces to the smallest. For the smallest nudge, Zoom in very close and nudge is only 1 pixel.

Look for courses in the Graphic Arts. You will also need to learn Illustrator and InDesign/Quark. That is the holy trinity of Graphic Design.
